What city and state are you located and what do you consider cheap?

Ask around... coworkers, friends... look for adds in local bridal magazines and phone books.
Before you start calling/meeting, be able to tell the caterer an aprox. # of guests so they can give you an accurate quote.

Are you renting a reception space? Many require you use their catering while some allow outside chefs. You might want to look into that first. Some might offer discounts if you use some of their recommended bakers, linen services, etc. My reception hall required us to use their food. If we also wanted our cake or DJ through them it would be cheaper.
