    Cannot create file:system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS
    Exception applying hosts file changes:
    Cannot create file C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS.

I have tried HostsXpert.exe to restore Host file to it's original condition. However, it didn't appear to work as intended and the problem remains. I clicked "writeable" prior to "restore to original condition".

How about a simple System Restore. Do that and please post back here with whether it worked.

"System Restore" does not solve the problem. I have had the problem for some months and it is only evident when I try to activate a particular "FireTrust" product namely, Benign. All other systems and downloads are working fine.

Are you on the administrator account? If that doesn't help then go into command prompt and try to delete it from there. After that see if you can get the hosts file from another computer and copy it back.

The problem now solved but I'm not sure just how. There were so many things I tried and then all of a sudden I found that I could apply HostsXpert.exe to restore Host file to it's original condition. It wouldn't work before but something I have done recently must have fixed the problem thus allowing the programme to restore Host file to original condition.

    Many thanks to all replies.

    Regards
