My gas wall unit is not working, the pilot light stays lit but when I turn up the thermostat it doesn't come on... should I just change the thermostat? If I try to change it, do I have to shut off electric, it looks like just a couple of wires to reattach...

Before you replace cross over or jumper the 2 wire together that go to the tstat,prob. Red and white,this bypasses the tstat and furnace should fire up and heat,if this happen then consider replacing the tstat, if still doesn`t work is prob. Something else not working, unless the wall furnace has a blower it just might not have or need electricity,but if it does, yes,, turn off elect. When replacing anything to do with your furnace,, better safe than sorry

Just make sure you disconnect the thermostat from the wires and then jump the wires together. Jumping across terminals on a stat can cause a small spark with hi amperage that can take out the heating anticipator in the stat-especially a mercury bulb type. This will ruin the thermostat for heating use and require replacement.

The furnace fired up without doing a thing, it doesn't have a blower, if the problem happens again, I'll try your steps out...
