    Relinquishment and adoption
My friend and his wife are going to adopt a child from Korea.
He is really not willing to do the adoption. Therefore, he is trying to request an agreement with his wife. The agreement is about relinquishing his right on that child and not paying any child support if they have a divorce. Does that agreement work? Or is there any obligation that he will have no matter what agreement they have?

If that is the case, why doesn't just SHE adopt the child? Is she forcing him into it?

In some states, a married couple HAS to be together on the adoption, or it will not go through. Also--some international adoptions can only happen to couples, not to single people.

And no--if he adopts, he is legally the father, and relinquishment of rights will probalby not happen.

Your friend and his wife need to have a serious conversation about going through with this adoption--if they aren't on the same page, it WILL cause a divorce in the end. Has he been honest with her about that? Have they had counseling about adopting? There's a lot missing to this story, I think.
