Hi, this looks like an informative site. I'm in need of assistance. I noticed water on the floor near my toilet. It appears a rubber bolt gasket was decayed? I have a 20 year old American Standard Plebe toilet, 2 part/tank to bowl. I got a replacement package at Home Depot. The gasket that seats the tank to the toilet just doesn't seem to "sit" properly. Is there anything I can do to prevent further leaking? The toilet also leaked a little from the new bolt, think it just went to one side. Is it permissible to use plumbers putty around the gasket? Please assist, these knees don't like going to the second floor all the time.

I would not use plumber putty to set a tank on a toilet. Some repair lits have serval gaskets to choose from and maybe you need to experiment with another kit. The big donut gasket never feels like a great fit because it is designed to get squashed into the tiolet as you tighten the two mounting bolts. Is your current leak from the bolt gaskets or the big donut? Not meaning to insult your installation techniques but did you read the instruction flyer that was in the packet? I love how you are told to tighten the two bolts but make sure not to tighten too much.

Make sure you have a american standard tank to bowl gasket.. Don't use an after market.. Get a new set of bolts and a gasket.. The tank will bobble if you have the right gasket.. tighten with bolts and pull down till snug.. Don't break the tank.. Putty won't work.. If this don't work get a new flush valve and install. Stephen
