Ok, so as I stated in a previous thread my Hampton Bay ceiling fan has the problem where the lights dim, go off, come on by themselves, or the fan turns on for no reason. The company said the model wasn't a remote model so the previous home owner installed the remote on it.

I decided to disassemble the fan (sans directions) and got it down to just wires. I don't see the remote box anywhere. I am so confused I want to scream. Where the heck is the remote box hidden??

The company was no help because the model isn't a remote model, so they told me the owner must have added that himself. Thanks though!

I had the exact problem with the fan being controlled by ghosts. I opened the remote and the receiver and made sure all the dip switches were in the proper positions for each component, and fully pushed into position. Everything worked perfect afterward.

Did the fan ever respond to a remote for you? Is it possible it never dig have a remote and the problem is due to bad connections or something?

I purchased a new receiver at the Depot. I noticed that the receiver uses a 12 volt battery. So before I replace the old one I am going to change the toggle switch and add a new battery to the receiver. If all else fails I will install the new unit.

The problem was one of two things: bad remote receiver or improper wiring

While replacing the receiver I noticed the original one was not installed properly. There are five wires on the receiver:
1 Black - 2 White - 3 White - 4 Black - 5 Red (or blue)

I noticed the faulty receiver had wires 1+3 connected to the main electrical wires and wires 2,4,and 5 going to the fan and lights. It should have been wires 1+2 going to the main wire and wires 3,4, and 5 going to the fan and lights. Not sure this matters because I am not an electrician, but it was not connected correctly according to the manual.

Anyway, I got a new (identical brand) remote receiver and made sure to change the dipswitches so that our other remote fans don't interfere. I wired it in CORRECTLY and turned the power back on. Since then the fan and lights have worked perfectly.

So it was either a faulty remote receiver or the original wasn't wired correctly. Replacing it did the trick. Hope this helps someone besides me.

It does matter-- there is a good chance the old remote receiver would have worked if wired correctly.
