How to cap off old hot wires?
Duane (?)
I simply take wire nuts, one for each lead, screw the cap down and then wrap the cap with electrical tape to keep it from accidentally falling off.
Don:
If you use the right size wire nuts stripped properly, they won't fall off.
I agree with your statement, however, I'm more worried about the next guy who sticks his hands in the box and doesn't realize these wires are capped off for a reason!
I just do it as a matter of a safety habit.
What's tape going to do. Electrical tape has two functions in my book. 1) marking wires, 2) attaching wires to pull.
It isn't worth anything to insulate. It usually falls off, especially when some bozo dicides to use it in a car environment. I prefer self-fusing silicon electrical tape. It's $20+/roll. It's also great for a temporary repair for a drain leak.
See,
Here we have a difference of opinion. I prefer to do one or two figure 8s then then wrap the tape around the bottom. Anything to maker the following think first.
