Gas Water Heater burner/pilot light .
Hey there, It has been a wild week. I had to travel 2 hours to a hospital because they thought my grandfather had an anyerism. Luckily he is still in the hospital but OK.

But when I got home I had no hot water. Check and pilot light was out. Relit pilot OK. Turned thermostat knob up, burner kicked on and burned fine for about 4 seconds, then flame started getting weaker, erratic, then it goes out, pilot light and all.

This water heater is about a year old. The pilot light was going out about 4 months or more ago. I bought a generic thermocouple from Lowe's. It fixed the problem.

Any idea what this could be?

It could be a leak in the water heater putting the flame out or a faulty gas meter regulator or some pipe dope that worked its way up to your gas valve.
