My wife and I are planning a trip to las vegas this spring. A friend of ours suggested we check out one of the ranches... at first we didn't know what he was talking about' but then he filled us in.. We're probably just being naïve islanders... but isn't prostitution illegal? How do they get away with that and how does it work?

Las vegas has lots of bent rules anyway. They are one of the few places in america you can gamble other than the lotery. Indian reservations in particular have different laws but if it is legal in Nevada state then it is like in North Carolina you can't tie your elephant to a parking meter! Everywhere else you can but if you have an elephant I'm not going to tell you to move it. Some places are strang to others.

I saw a television program about the Nevada houses of prostitution... I think it was the one Chuck recommended. The prostitutes will service men, women or couples. As I remember, the cost is $500.00 and up. They accept credit cards. The women are checked for sexually transmitted diseases on a regular basis. The businesses are legal and must comply with health and safety laws in order to maintain their licenses.

As customers, you and your wife would enter the establishment and perhaps, have a drink at a bar, then choose a woman to service you both. The fee and services desired are negotiated when you get to her room. Again, as I remember, the cost starts at 500.

Not all of Nevada is legal concerning prostituition. Same with Rhode Island (where the act of sex for money is not illegal except for street solicitation and running of a brothel). Prostitution itself is illegal in Las Vegas and Clark County (because of the population size) - that does not mean you will not see hookers on the streets or walking into the casinos. Or the popular "escort services".

Under Nevada state law, any county with a population of less than 400,000 is allowed to license brothels if it so chooses[1]. As of 2007, Clark County (which contains Las Vegas) and Washoe County (which contains Reno) are the only counties with population above 400,000.[2] Incorporated towns and cities in counties that allow prostitution may regulate the trade further or prohibit it altogether.
As of July 2004, brothels are illegal under county or municipal law in Carson City (which encompasses the entire county), Douglas County, and Lincoln County. Eureka County neither permits nor prohibits licensed brothels and does not have any. The other 11 counties permit licensed brothels in certain specified areas or cities.[3]

Yes, that is why I knew that name of that one place, they had a special about them on TV a while back. Or course I now know more about it, than I could possibliy ever want to know, heck maybe someone from there will log on and give us up to date facts.

There are several places in this world where prostitution is legal, Amsterdam in Holland comes to mind. What you also forget is this is the United STATES of America. While its been eroded since 1788 (when the Constitution was ratified), states do have the right to make their own laws governing actions within the state. So Nevada, many years ago, decided it was better to legalize prostitution so it could be taxed and regulated then to keep it as a crime. Visitors to Nevada can go to a brothel and be assured the service providers are healthy, they have to have regular checkups. The prostitutes are not exploited. And the state gets income. Not a totally bad thing In my opinion and definitely not "bizarre".

I'm rather amused by your comment about a post-christian society. If anything we are talking abour a PRE-Christian society. Prostitution is often referred to as the world's oldest profession. Prostitution has been around both legally and illegally since there were societies. In fact, it as been legal more often and in more places then its been illegal.

Today, America's weird attitudes toward sexuality is the result of **400 years as a Christian culture**(86% of Americans declare they are Christians now). Simply shows the inferior and negative attitudes toward sex and lack of any idea on the part of Christian parents on how to teach their children healthy sexuality.

The sexual mess America is in falls squarely in the lap of the repressed and fearful Christians and their 400 year old culture of shame.

I certainly didn't mean to pass judgement or offend anyone, I apologize if my comment came across as such. I simply find the concept of prostitution strange. I understand it is an old profession... one practiced by all manner of cultures. I suppose in my simple way I just assumed we had moved beyond it. I am a christian, and I enjoy sex. I've never thought of myself as repressed (my wife and I enjoy each other very much!) and I don't consider sex shameful. God invened it... he's not down on sex... he's up on life (to quote doug fields). As for my comment on living in a post-christian society... though I'm pleased to have amused someone... my intended meaning was more along these lines: once upo a time this country was rooted in a biblical understanding of the relationship between god and man, and man and man (not to mention man and woman)... that many professing christians throughout our history have been crass or hypocritical is a given... we are human and we all screw up... we all have our share of weakness and wickedness. I was just surprised that the social evolution of our culture has retrograded to such a point that in 2008 we have forgoten that the intimacy and sanctity of our flesh (as shared between a husband and wife) is a beautiful thing and should be preserved. That's all. Again, I apologize if I have come across as judgemental or narrow.

The only problem with that is that prostitution has been legal in Nevada for more than 30 years I believe. Its not a new thing.

For myself, having worked the street for years in my ministry, work with many hookers all the time. Many are there for all sorts of reasons, that can always be discused on a thread of its own, but they are also well mentioned in the bible, and are just a fact of life.

But I believe the making of prostitution illegal has been a more moderan man law, as I believe ( without pulling up a lot of sites) that in early america it may be frowned on, but was not really illegal.

And it exists, I wold much rather see it licensed and control, than being done in city parks leving signs on the play ground, or in car in parking lots and the such.

And from working the streets, one would be surprised at the connections of the drug trade and the working girls on the street.

Perhaps you are right and I live in a fantasy. I'm not the brightest lamp in the night sky... I know that. I do not believe that I've made anything up... but I could be wrong. I do know that I enjoy my monogomous life. Then again maybe I'm just a close mnded bigoted fundi. Sigh... it makes me sad to think that I might be failing my children by being so judgemental. If you think the Christians are bad take a good look at Hindu and Muslim Culture... they STILL burn people alive over it. Its been a few hundred years (like over 300) since we did that.
