I have a ford taurus and the transmision will not go into gear, someone told me it could be the catilitic converter not letting it go into gear, is this possible

My catalytic converter messed up and it certanly did not act like that. Sounds like transmission problems... but I am no auto repair person.

Not likely. See if the link below gives you some insight, even though the specifics are for Hondas:

You may also want to check the Transmission Range Sensor (on top of the transmission), which go bad on Tauruses. Also, check the shift cable adjustment.

I thought is more than likley a transmission problem, it will go into reverse OK but not into any forward gears the engine runs fine it just feels like the clutch is will not engage(it is an automatic, but that is what it feels like)

Catalytic converter has nothing to do with the transmission going in gear.

Have you checked the transmission fluid level? What color is the transmission fluid? Does it smell burnt?
