    Puppy Hasn't Pooped!
We just brought home a Toy Rat Terrier (born 11/7/05). We have had him almost 24 hours and he hasn't pooped yet. He has peed many times and he has eaten. He does have a little cold and is taking amoxicillain. He seems alert and active. Should I be worried that he hasn't pooped yet? He has eaten canned food (won't eat the softened hard food yet - a little spoiled I think) and he does take a little Karo syrup. Should I call the vet (though he may not be opened until Tuesday because of the holiday)? Thanks!

    Not pooping
    Hi, slbaker,
Yes, I would call the Vet. He/she might take calls, even though the office isn't open. My Vet takes calls anytime he is home, and if left a message, will call back.
I know that antibotics sometimes causes constipation in humans, but have no statistics about that in dogs.
Just to be on the safe side, call the Vet.
Happy New Year! And good luck with the puppy!

No need to panic yet. Whatever you do, don't give him a laxative until you have talked to a vet. Unless he shows other signs of distress, I would wait until Tuesday. Are you feeding what he was eating before? A change in diet on top of the stress of a new home may have shut down his digestive system. Don't worry about not eating much either. He won't harm himself by not eating.
Likely he has a generous layer of fat.

Once a vet has checked him and he is settled into his new home, you should work at changing him over to a dry chow. Best stick with the same protein source as the canned you are feeding now. Slowly work the dry in with the canned over about a week. You may soften it a little with water at first, but you shouldn't need to. All 17 of the 7-8 week puppies I have had since 1991 were on dry chow when I got them. Likely about half a cup each of 3 times a day. Put it down. Take up whatever isn't eaten in 15 minutes, and do not offer anything more until the next mealtime. In a few days, he should be eating what he needs.

I have abundant experience with young puppies, and some of the best training available.

    Puppy
    Hi, slbaker,
I do apologize to you if I had given you any bad advice. But, the other person answering your question gave you the same advice, call your Vet. Guess it wasn't too bad.
