    Direct TV to VCR

I would go to dollar store or radio shack and get a video switch

Then hook DTV to #1 input -- VCR into #2 input -- output to TV

Normally you watch DTV and can mark switch to keep it straight

If you want to watch VCR switch the switch -- watch Video

If you run signal through VCR there is signal loss

    Diwiney,

I agree with Biggsie on the signal loss through the RF port on the VCR but you can get around that by using a different connection port.

Does your VCR and TV have an RF port (IN) or Composite (Yellow-Red-White) receptacles and is there a round receptacle just above the yellow port also used for (IN) and a separate line for (OUT).

If that is what you have, then this is what I would suggest to you:

Connect the Directv controller's (Out) port (s-video), round port above yellow receptacle to the (IN) of the ports on the VCR (out) of the VCR to the (IN) of the TV. White to white to White and Red to Red to Red. These are your audio connections.
