One of the only things most do-it-yourselfers can do is to change the transmission fluid and filter regularly. Ford recommends doing this at least every 30,000 miles, using Mercon V ATF. If you decide to get this done, be sure to drop and clean the pan, as well as replace the filter. Don't just use a T-Tech machine. If the problem persists, take the car to Ford for evaluation.

Most Ford automatic transmissions are engineered to go 125,000 to 150,000 miles, before needing to be rebuilt.
