    Pregnant german shepherd
Hi there my nine year old german shepherd is 50 days into her pregnancy and she appears to keep wetting herself she is drinking a lot as well I don't think she realises she is doing it as she normally is a very clean dog I've had her since she was three months old is this a normal thing in pregnancy do you think she is getting near her time ? Thank you

I know nothing about breeding. So I am going to try and use a little common sense here. She is 9 years old... Quite old for a dog and she is losing control of her bladder I believe she is about 13 days from giving birth... I think I read it was 63 day from conception.
I would say get her to a vet. Make sure you discuss her age with them. *edit* I went googling some sites said 63 to 65 days 1 site said 61 to 67 days... but none of them said anything about the dog urninating , with out realising it. I would take her to the vet.

58 to 63 days is normal gestation. If she is very large and carrying a lot of pups, the pressure on her bladder is tremendous. As she gets closer to whelp, you need to take her out, for bathroom breaks, more often. Definitely make your Vet aware of this.

Get some books and read them. A good one to start with is Successful Dog Breeding, by Chris Walkowicz, DMV. Producing quality puppies requires serious study. I am sure many of the problems people ask about here and elsewhere come from failure to follow the known good breeding practices. A good website to start on is Articles I would think if you have no better resources for the medical question than here, you need other stuff too.

Definitely call your vet. Has the dog ever had problems before during pregnancy? I have a dog who is 2 years old that I rescued and she started urinating uncontrollably. She would sometimes urinate in her sleep also. When we done the proper blood work on her we found that she had a UT infection and was also in her first stages of kidney failure. Your dog being 9 it could be many of things. She may have a weak bladder and the puppies are pushing on it. It could be a UT infection or worse. So get her to the vet.

No its not normal. And a nine year old dog, that too old really , as you risk loseing your dog, as well as the puppys,
Dog can go as far 65 66 days , really depends on the dog,
I would think she have problems with her bladder , the pups are pushing down on it ,
Most gsd can carry up to 10 puppys , that a lot for her to carry , at her age
Please consult your vet , asap , as least you will know what happening ,
    I own 5 gsd

Thank you for your reply this wasn't a planned pregnancy she has been to the vet twice and has been xrayed as well the vet seems to think she will be fine despite her age I just thought I would see if anyone else had experienced the wetting problem he does no of the problem that's why she was exrayed and he said its just a pregnancy nothing else wrong:confused:

My Ava just had a litter of 9 puppies (also unplanned, as we rescued her from a shelter and found out a few weeks later she was pregnant).

The first few weeks we had her home she never had an accident in the house. Once she started to gain weight due to the growing puppies she had 2 accidents (urinating only) in the house. I figured it was because the puppies were getting bigger and she was having trouble holding her urine.

Just make sure to let her out to potty more often... she needs to be eating and drinking more, thus she will have to go to the bathroom more.
