    Unwanted mating
I think the male yorkie I'm babysitting has mated with my female chihuhua. I had them separated but when I came home, they came to the door to see me. I don't know how he got out of his pen or even if they mated (she is in heat). Does anyone know what my options are? I don't want her to have puppies.

Then why didn't you have her fixed when you got her if you already had a male dog in the house. Now you have to deal with it, go to the vet, have her checked out and then... hey, you could have some really cute puppies, think of it that way

Your choices are to let her have the pups or have her spayed before she gets to far along pregnant. I suggest if you don't want the pups take her to the vet tell them the situation. They will probably do a pre-surgery check up and get her scheduled to be spayed. We do this quiet often at our clinic because the last thing people need are unwanted pups. Hope this helps. :)

Talk to the vet. The conventional wisdom is not much can be done. I often suggest that people should be prepared for creative, strenuous efforts to get together. Expect the unexpected. This is very unfortunate. How old is she? You do want to have the vet examine her to make sure she wasn't injured.

Oh, don't let up your guard. She will gladly mate with him again and any other dog she manages to got to. The more matings, the more likely puppies are. If the damage isn't already done, don't give it another chance.

Thank you for all the answers received so far. To answer some of your questions: the female chi is 5 years old, the yorkie male around 12 years old. I did not have her spayed to begin with because I have a male chi that I was going to use to breed to her, they are both long hairs, papered, and both weigh under 4 lbs. I was waiting for him to be 2 years old before I breed them. I do plan to get her to the vet asap and see what our options are. I have been told that the vet can do an early check to see if she even got pregnant, before proceeding further. As for Mr. yorkie, he stays in a bedroom now, and he and she switch off time spent in the bedroom. Thank you all again for your help.

All those thinking of breeding will do well to read through some of the material at Articles We have a shortage of homes, not breeders.
