    Heat pump freezing up
I have a Rudd Heat pump outside unit that is used for heat/cool... it is freezing up. Yesterday I pulled the covers off the outside unit and noticed the coils were very dirty. I cleaned them by using a water hose. Additionally, I used the water hose to get rid of the ice that had formed on both sides of the coils. Ran the heater last night, temp was in the 40's, and this morning I noticed the coils have formed ice again.

Your defrost control circuit is more than likely the problem. There are circuit boards and sensors that control the heat pump that tell the heat pump when it is time to defrost.
