How long do I have to wait until my nephew is considered abandoned? His parents aren't taking care of him, they just drop him off with his grandparents and that's it. How long do I have to wait until we can start trying to file for custody because they've abandoned him. I can't find the answers I need.

How many months have the parents been gone with no contact of the child? Was there some arrangements with the grandparents to watch them while there were doing some travel?
What country are you in, and if in the US what state.

They've been gone off and on for a few weeks that's why we were trying to find out. They ask the grandparents to watch for a day or sometimes an hour or so and will disappear for a week or so. And we're in California
