Hello - not sure I'm posting to the right forum, but I couldn't find anything that was a closer fit. Basically, what I'm looking for is information about frequencies and datastream formats for automatic garage door systems. Yes, I'm completely aware that there are LOTS of cheap universal garage door openers available, but I'm looking to build a better mouse trap. If anyone has info on this subject, it is much appreciated.

Sounds like you'll be building it yourself.

For gadgetry ideas, I like to surf radioshack.com for the info and the terminology of the parts, then surf elsewhere for better prices.
