Most states and areas have a legal aid department, Also in some cases you may also hire an attorney by the hour to merely give you legal advice.
Also if you were married, the possessions were "Both of yours" not just yours, so this is an issue that are not normally ever resloved very well.
Hello aunt:
I don't think anybody has extra money laying around for a lawyer. But, when you need one, YOU NEED ONE. With SOOOOOOO many lawyers in the phone book, I'm sure you can find one who will take payments.
That's what I'd do. If you're thinking about NOT hiring a lawyer, take a look around here at the problems people are having because they DIDN'T hire one.

My wife filed for divorce 20 years ago in California and my wages got Garnished for one month for filing fee. How do I find out if it went through. I have been living with her thinking I was married. She's gone now with another man. Served me with divorce papers in Oregon and I don't even know if I am really married to her.
Ok, if you went before a judge, a preacher, a religious leader and said "I DO" you were married,
If she filed for divorce 20 years ago, but dropped the case then no, so you contact that court where it was filed 20 years ago and see what the status of that case was. And I have to say if you stayed with her, you did ot once in 20 years think on checking??
So now she is filing for divorce again, several things, one she did not complete it, so she is filing again, 2. she did divorce you but since you lived with her after the divorce, you became married again according to common law staus of the states you were living in. So you need to file for divorce again.
So you need to address the divorce papers in action now, if you have proof of the divorce from 20 years ago, you can use that if you want to show up and fight the divorce,
What does she want from the divorce, if just out, sign it and be rid of her.
What do you want, is there property to fight over? Money/ kids?
