I am replacing the bathtub drain in my daughter's house. The house was built in the mid-60's and has an enameled, cast iron tub. I have removed the old drain, but the replacement that I got at the home center doesn't fit. Specifically, the strainer basket on the replacement is too large to fit through the hole in the bottom of the tub. Is there a specific drain system (old one was trip lever type and would like to replace with same type) that I should look for? Is it only available at a plumbing supply house?

Strainer basket= tub shoe. All trip lever tub wastes and overflow should be the same size . Take it back and exchange it. If the second tub shoe doesn't fit in the tub drainclick on back. Good luck, Tom

Thanks for the reply. I took the old shoe and compared it to the replacement. It is at least a 1/4" smaller in diameter than the replacements (the replacements were all the same size at both Lowe's and Home Depot). The drain opening, though, did seem to be made of something other than cast iron - felt like hardened wax to me. So I just reamed the hole large enough to accept the replacement shoe. I'll put plumber's putty under the lip of the shoe and it should install without a problem.

This would be the old plumbers putty that hardened up with age. All tub drains are one size. Glad you got it installed. Regards, Tom
