    Is my Girlfriend pregnant?
I am 21 and my girlfriend is 20, and has been taking Microgynon 30 for over a year. As far as I know she has missed a pill by 4 hours once a few months back, but in the instructions it says it is fine to take it up to 6 hours late.

When she takes her 7 day break she can start bleeding the next day or up to 4 days later, so looking at the day she begins bleeding doesn't help much.

The reason I am worried is that today I noticed that her breasts were quite large, she complained on Saturday that she had blood in her underwear, she has got quite moody (but not at me, she is moody to her family but clinging to me like crazy), she looks a little bloated everywhere, she was complaining of pain in her side, has been urinating more than usual and didn't poo at all yesterday with only a small one today (usually she's quite regular with that) and was complaining of breast soreness earlier.

The only unusual thing she did this month was take two pill packets in a row (she has done it once before) and her last pill is due on Thursday but she has never had all these symptoms before.

Could these symptoms be PMS related as according to my doctor the pill is over 99% effective if taken correctly (she is usually within 20 minutes of the correct time as she remembers to take it when one of her favourite TV shows starts).

Well she got her period, started with cramps and light bleeding and then on the Sunday (4 days after last pill) it got heavy, apparently this is normal for her.

The only thing I am worried about is that she has been compaining about having sore breasts all day, although I am hoping that that is a result of her getting extremely drunk last night and throwing up 6 times (For some reason she drunk a phenominal amount of alcohol in the pub).

I did try to talk to her at the time about it and the possibility of her taking a test, even if it was just to put my mind at rest, but she wouldn't take one and told me to stop worrying. Since she is totally ignorant to the way her body works, contraception (she went to a catholic school and apparently they teach nothing, so its no wonder they had a load of pregnant teenagers there) and medical problems in general it hasn't filled me with much confidence.

I get sore breasts when I am due/on my period. That is sometimes part of having a period. I would say if its heavy and normal, you guys are probably not pregnant this month.

Good on you though for being so educated, :)

Well I was worried because the sore breasts occurred after the period, and I read that pill periods are not proper periods. Although I have since found out that if she were pregnant she would still miss those.

I do still worry though since she has been waking up with back and stomach aches, I am hoping she just has a bug though since we are in no way ready to be parents.

Edit: Also I noticed yesterday that she has that dark line along her belly that pregnant women seem to get, so either she's pregnant or her hormones are going crazy for some reason.
Edit2: I have spoken to her again and she still refuses to do a test, even if it is just to put my mind at ease. Its not like they are expensive.

    Terry,
Its time to relax a bit. Perhaps I missed you mentioning it, but do you use condoms? It may set your mind at ease a bit rather than depend solely on her to take birth control.

Sore/Swollen/painful breasts can occur for five main reasons in a woman's life.
    1. PMS
    2. Ovulation
    3. Pregnancy/breastfeeding
    4. Serious health concerns (mastitis, breast cancer, etc.)
    5. Hormonal changes/growth with age

The dark lines around a pregnant belly are typically only noticeable well into the pregnancy once the belly is very large. On some women this can be noticed earlier, yet for some it never really shows up, even at 9 months.

An important point for you to know is that a woman's body continually changes no matter how old she is. Frankly, I thought puberty had stopped for me around 17. However, at age 21, my breasts grew again and the "regularity" of my periods changed. At 20 years old, even on birth control, your girlfriend has lots of life/body changes ahead of her. Sore bodies, bowel changes, etc. are not just pregnancy symptoms but period symptoms as well. Once in a while, every woman will have a cycle that is not what she's used to.

Don't force the issue of testing and cause an argument because you still think she could be pregnant. The only time you need to worry is if she's a week late or more with no signs of her period. Yes, conception can occur on birth control but its rare. The fact that she had a period makes in extremely unlikely that she could be pregnant.

Well it's that time of month again and this time she's worried as well.

After last months odd period she had some strange things happen this month - discharge, pains etc. She took her last pill on Wednesday and so far nothing but some slight pain in her stomach, usually she begins bleeding lightly the day after she takes her last pill.

Up until last month we only used condoms when she was on her pill break because we were told by the doctor that the pill is 99% effective and the 1% was to cover themselves. It was only when I came online and searched that I discovered that a fair number of people have fallen pregnant whilst taking the pill properly.

It's a cross our fingers moment because she would usually start properly bleeding tomorrow or Monday, the only problem is that I can tell she is stressed by it and that's not helping matters. She is from a strict catholic family and what would happen if she got pregnant whilst unmarried stresses her out most of all.
