    Wrong cement
I made a mistake using ABS cement to join PVC pipe. DO I need to take them a part and redo it? The joints seems glued together pretty sturdy.

It is important to carefully select the proper solvent cement for your application. PVC cements should be used for PVC pipe and fittings, CPVC cements should be used for CPVC pipe and fittings and ABS cement should be used for ABS pipe and fittings. However, Oaty makes a all purpose cement that will bond both PVC and CPVC. Looks like a "redo" is in your future. Growler's bang on! Good luck, Tom

I had to do a little PVC job last week. The first can I grabbed of the shelf was an Oaty material labeled to use on all 3. As far as I know, I don't have a stick of ABS pipe in my house. Bought it anyhow, thinking I may run into some before the can dries up or rusts away. I assume Oaty has test data showing it works on PVC OK.

PVC, CPVC, and ABS don't mix. Years ago when I worked in the paint industry, it was well known that if you combined resins that didn't mix well, the paint wouldn't weather well. So even if the joints are holding now, I would replace them.

Tom, any place around you where there are whole fields of little painted panels hanging in the Florida sun? When they came looking like wall paint, we knew GM wasn't interested in that formulation.

I remember them from years ago. I used to see them in a field some miles inland on the way to a Arcadia service call. Since I've retiredI don't stray very far from the coast anymore. Cheers, Tom
