Since no one has answered your question yet, I thought that I would take a shot at it. But, I'm cheating some here because I got the answer that I am going to give you from another site. Perhaps the answer is a good one, though.

From WikiAnswers - Why if your goldfish on bottom of tank he is not dead ...

    Quote:

Goldfish sit on the tank bottom when they sleep or feel unwell. One reason can be when their water is too acidic, so it may be useful to test the water for both pH and nitrites regularly. Also, maintain good tank hygiene and change one third of the water every week or two. Check the fish for any abnormalities on their body, or in the way they swim. If you notice anything unusual, ask your aquarium supply shop for the right treatment.
Is the goldfish that is staying on the bottom moving or doing anything on its own at all?

Hopefully, others will come along to offer their advice also.

    A) Change the water

    B) Is the water filtered?

    C) Have you cleaned the water lately?

    D) Goldfish die easily, there's not much you can do to save them if they have a disease unless you are positive as to what it is and can get the medication for it.

It could be but it's hard to just know..

I used to have tetras, they lived around 3-5 years a piece, one time I had one go crazy and it couldn't control its swim bladder and the next day it died, so sometimes weird things just happen. :(

How long ago did you change the tank? Have you checked the levels since the tank change?
