Old Honeywell has the following colored wires coming out of the wall:
Green
Blue
Orange
Red
White
Yellow

I have the following terminals on the new programmable Hunter thermostat:
RH
RC
(the above have a factory-installed red jumper connecting them)
G
Y
W

What goes to what?

Look at the beginning of this board for the sticky notes. It is all in there for you.

Did you make a note of where the different colors were when you took them off the old thermostat? If not here is a hint for you: Look at the circuit board at the furnace and look at the terminals for the low voltage coming from the thermostat.
You will have terminals lettered as follows;
C which is the common.
G which is the control for the blower motor
W which is the control for the gas valve
Y which is the control for the outdoor AC
R which is the wire that takes the 24 volts to the thermostat.

Whatever color of wires are on these terminals must then you should connect them to the same lettered terminals on the thermostat.

Also you will have two wires connected to the furnace that are coming from the outdoor AC
One of them should connect to the Y terminal that already will have one wire on it from the thermostat, the second of the two wires should connect to the terminal marked C.

You didn`t say but sounds like you have a heatpump ,the older stat had a blue and orange wire ,you didn`t mention having a place on the new stat to hook up,, if this is true,you need a different tstat

Most likely that is correct. If you aren't sure if you have a heat pump, don't feel bad. That is common enough to be covered in the sticky too.

The different wires are still connected to the old backing plate of the Honeywell I'm replacing. I put the old front back on, and it's still operational. I'll try tracing to the furnace. And, it is a gas Westinghouse, not a heat pump. I was confused by the blue and orange wires also, since a lot of what I had found on the net said those wires often were coded for a heat pump installation. Thanks.

Many thermostats will work with both heat pumps and a furnace. If you have a gas furnace, just leave the blue and orange go.

Note, I don't think they were ever common, but gas heat pumps do exist.
