White Rogers Hot Water Control Valve Turns on But Not off
I have a hot water heating system with three zones. This past summer all three control valves were replace, old ones were leaking, and three new thermostats installed I don't think the system ever worked after the installation but it was summer and we weren't using the heat. The new control valves are white rogers flow control valves and the new thermostats are ritetemp 8050c. According to the installation guide for the ritetemp thermostats zoned motor valves three wire (pwr, valve on, valve off) should be connected to RH, W, A respectively. O.K. the problem, two of the zones work great, the third zone tuns on but not off? Each zone starts the boiler and pump but again the third zone never turns off. I had a service tech out and he said I needed a 24v 40va transformer and that would fix the problem. I replaced the older 24v 20va transformer but with no luck. I'm stumped? Please help!

What is the model number of the White Rodgers zone valve? Actually I do not need the model because W/R only makes one style of 3 wire valves and the only difference between them is just the copper pipe size.

See top of page 3 it confirms the necessity of a 40VA.

You should have let the service person do the repair. The wiring on these valves are tricky. All the information you need is in the link I provided. Good luck.

Thanks for the quick response. You are correct on the valve type WR 1311 I downloaded the manual and have read it. I had the technicians out, twice, at $75 an hour plus the $150 labor they chared me to install the three valves. On the last visit the technician told me to swap out the 20va transformer for a 40va but still no luck. I'm an electronics technician and think I'm going to try and troubleshoot now that I've read the manual myself and have a better understanding of how this system works. I've also downloaded the thermostat manual from the internet and according what I've read, RH (5) connects to A (6) and holds the solenoid valve in the off position. When heat is on RH disconnects from from A and connects to W (4) to turn the system on. According the WR 1311 manual jumping 4-5 opens the valve and jumping 5-6 closes the valve, the two manuals match so I'm going to check the wiring and ensure it's correct. I'll let you know what I find.

    Thanks again

Good luck with it. The W/R 2 and 3 wire valves are a bit of a stinker because they use a rotate plate instead of a on and off system. They are good valves and in some cases you are forced to use them. W/R valves have a leak rate that will keep the lines from freezing if they have to pass through a cold section in the house. You can shut the zone off but the bleed rate allows just enough hot water to flow to keep them safe. Now Honeywell when it shuts off no leak and frozen pipes.
