    Life After Birth Control?
I am 26 years old and was put on the pill at the age of 16 due to very painful and heavy periods. I am now engaged to be married next summer, and I wanted to stop taking the pill for several reasons other than that.
Now, though, I am having very very irregular cycles. First, when stopping the pill I didn't have a period for months, then had one very heavy and long cycle, bleeding for over 1 and 1/2 months before my gynecologist put me back on the pill for one month to "reset" my cycle.
After completing that round of pills I have experienced the same thing, no period again for several months and now I have been on my period going on three weeks now with no signs of lightening or stopping.
I am very worried that this is going to affect my relationship with my fiancé, and also whether this will affect my chances of getting pregnant in the future.
I have searched and searched all over for tips on what to expect when you stop taking the pill, but I can't find anything other than generic "abnormal cycles" answers. This does not seem very normal to me. Need some advice!!

Nothing you have described so far seems unnatural. Since you were originally put on the pill due to heavier periods, your body will likely revert back to that once the pill has completely worked out of your body. There will also be a transition period you will experience while your body adjusts. This could include heavy bleeding, longer or shorter cycles, spotting, you name it.

It also has little to do with your fertility. The rest of your cycle is more telling, but even that will be confusing until your body adjusts.

I'm in a similar boat. I just got married 6m ago and I stopped taking the pill in October. I would suggest talking about the possibility of fertility problems with your fiancé before you get married. You just never know what the future can hold and its good to talk about big issues like this. For all you know, he could have fertility problems, you could, or you could get pregnant the first month of trying. Its just good to be on level ground before you start your lives together. ;)
