I think this might be the movie and case you are thinking of. I saw the same movie, and was amazed at the similarity between that movie and the more recent case that I also attached to this message...

Report: Convicted California Child Molester Arrested in Police Sting Operation
    The Associated Press
    Published: Jan 4, 2003

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - A convicted child molester who kidnapped and sexually tortured a boy whose story was turned into a television movie was arrested Friday night after allegedly trying buy a child, two television stations reported.

A spokeswoman for the Berkeley police department told TV stations KRON and KTVU that Kenneth Parnell's home was searched and he was arrested after a tip. No further details were immediately available.

Police did not immediately respond to a request by The Associated Press for comment.

An admitted child kidnapper, Parnell has been convicted twice before of kidnapping and molesting young boys.

In 1972, Parnell snatched Steven Stayner, then 7, and held him for seven years before the boy escaped and was reunited with his family. His brother, Cary Stayner, later killed four women at Yosemite National Park and was sentenced to death.

Steven Stayner was killed in a motorcycle crash in 1989. His kidnapping was the subject of the book "I Know My First Name is Steven" and the 1989 TV movie of the same name.

Kidnapped boy was forced to call his captor 'Dad'

AdvertisementA Missouri boy held captive for more than four years was kidnapped at gunpoint, according to court documents obtained by US media today.

There has been some speculation that the boy went to his captor willingly, given that he had lived in relative freedom - allowed to have sleepovers, go to the mall, use the internet - and had never asked for help.

Court documents showed that Shawn Hornbeck, now 15, had been abducted at gunpoint while riding his bike in rural Missouri in October 2002.

Michael Devlin, 41, was charged with kidnapping and armed criminal action on Wednesday in Hornbeck's abduction.

A probable cause statement obtained by the St Louis Post-Dispatch said Devlin, "abducted SDH [Shawn] utilising force for the purpose of terrorising the victim".

"After securing SDH, Michael Devlin flourished a handgun in order to gain compliance of the minor child. Michael Devlin then transported him out of the county and concealed his whereabouts for four years and three months," the statement said.

Devlin will be arraigned on Thursday on a kidnapping charge for the abduction of another boy, 13-year-old Ben Ownby, also found in his apartment on January 12, four days after his disappearance sparked a massive search.

I believe it was called "I Know my Name is Steven" or "...David" or some other boy's name.

    Hi there,

This doesn't fully answer your question but the movie was based on a true story. I can't remember the older boy's name but he was recoverd (escaped) within the last 10 years. Hope this helps a little bit!

OdditiesandEnds is absolutely correct. The movie was "I Know My First Name Is Steven."
I Know My First Name Is Steven (1989) (TV) It is based on the real life kidnapping of Steven Stayner. Very sad. He actually never got over it, had trouble dealing with life, and died young. His brother, Cary Stayner was convicted of the serial killings of 4 women in Yosemite, CA.
