    Locked jaw after surgery!
I had surgery Monday and had me wisdom teeth taken out. I had all four taken out, I had a dry sockets. And now that they have healed up my jaw is messed up I can only open my mouth to a small point. It hurts to eat. I can't even open my mouth to eat. It's like I have lock jaw!! The dentist told me if I don't get my jaw open like I suppose to then I'm going to have to have surgery to pry my mouth open.

I had mine taken out about a year ago and had the same problem. I also couldn't open my mouth afterwords. I had to go back to the oral surgeon and he said a MAJOR infecton will happen if you don't get the jaw muscles working again, and said I had to do jaw exersices.

Start be putting heat from a face cloth soaked in warm water and put it on your face. This will relax the muscles. Then try opening your mouth little by little. You will have to do this over and over and over.
It took me about 2 days of putting moist warm cloths on my face and stretching my jaw muscles little by little but its something that's got to be done if you don't want an infection.

Take some anti-inflammatories too, like Advil (Ibuprofen). Don't eat anything too chewy and don't yawn wide (keep your tongue on the roof of your mouth to prevent you from yawning too wide) Follow mjl's advice about the damp warm compresses and exercises.
