I built my home about 3 years ago and had a rough in for a full bath in the basement. I'm trying to identify or get some clarification on the drains though. I have a 2 inch pipe that I'm assuming is for the sink, and 4 inch pipe about 2 feet away that should be for the toilet, another 4 inch pipe that is a clean out, and another hole that is about 1 foot square. Is that hole for the tube/shower? If so, why is it so large and can anyone briefly explain how I would install a shower over that? Also, do I need to do anything with the clean out? It's capped off right now and I was going to frame in front of it leaving it accessible by an access door only. If its easier, I can send a picture or two.

I think you assumptions about the different pipes are right. Now about the square box that you think if for the tub. If the box is next to the wall where the drain of the tub might set then it is the tub drain and it is left big because you will possibly have to connect the tub drain to that line before you put the tub in place. It is big because one part of the tub drain where the water runs out of the tub will be below the level of the concrete floor.
Now if the box is in the center of the floor where a shower base might fit then it is for the shower and that drain will have to be located in the right place before you set the base.

The square box is located about a foot off the wall. Is that hole that big to allow for the p-trap? Does this mean that if I want to put a shower there that I need to relocate that drain?

That square hole is a tub dap out. If you had benn roughed for a shower there would be no square hole , just a raiser sticking up out of the pour.
Not to worry! You may cement up the hole and install a custom tile shower or they make a shower base that's made to replace a tub and just fits in the space without relocating the trap.Your choice. Regards, Tom

For a custom tile shower, unless you wish to change the drain location, you will cement over the dap out,leaving enough room around the raiser to install the flange flat against the slab, and install a flange type shower drain,(see image) on the raiser. Do you need instructions on how to pan a shower? If so click on back. Good luck, Tom

I would appreciate directions on that. At this stage I'm just trying to learn everything I can about plumbing the bath. If the dap out isn't centered where the shower is going to be won't I need to recenter that?
