    Personal growth book for friend
I wanted to know if anybody could recommend any books on personal growth. Not looking for inspirational type stuff, but more a 'how to get beyond' your problems type thing.

I just found out the other day that a guy that was like my own son tried to kill himself... again. He was my mechanic in the early 90's and he was 11 years old. In the past 10 years he has been going back and forth between three girlfriends that continuously fight over him. He has had babies to all three and been married to one or two of them. He has had drug and suicidal problems. He is a very intelligent guy but he gave up in the 9th grade when a teacher kept humiliating him. Since then he has been letting these three girls and the drugs rule his life.
I always felt that he had a lot of potential. I heard that preachers have prophesied over him that he is to do something spiritual for the Lord someday, which I can believe.

I wanted to buy a book that talks about getting over your past and starting a future, sort of like a Dr. Phil type speech. It would be good if it is from a Christian perspective as well.

Also I know he has been through a lot of therapy and rehabs and I know an addict has to want to change so I am not looking for replies to do with that. I know his grandparents will take care of that end of it.

    Thanks

I would suggest reading books by Marianne Williamson or Melody Beattie (sp) because those two women address the whole person. You may not like their style though. Becoming a helper really demands that we know ourselves, doesn't it?
