We are having our kitchen remodeled, including replacing our dishwasher and countertops.
Question: Is there an alternate way to hook up the dishwasher vent pipe than the traditional way of having it vented through a fitting mounted on the kitchen sink? We'd like to avoid drilling another hole in the new countertop and eliminate that fitting, if possible.

What you are referring to isn't a vent. It's a counter top air gap and in my area of Tampa Bay we have a much better way, no holes in the counter top, no installation problems and no service calls. It's called a high loop and here's how it works. You take the dish washers hose and loop it up in the cabinet as close to the counter top and as high as you can loop it. Secure the hose with a pipe strap or band iron and connect to the disposal or a branch tailpiece. Some codes mandate a counter top air gap so if you've pulled a permit check with the building department. But if you want a set up with the least amount of problems in counter top flooding and service calls go with a high loop.

If you live in area where an air gap is required by local code, you could always go with a Johnson Tee instead of a counter mounted air gap.
