I have a 4 month old Parson Russell Terrier. He sleeps in a crate which he is OK with as he will go in his crate during the day no problem. My husband goes to bed around 1am and takes the dog out for toilet before going to bed but at exactly 3am each night the dog starts to bark. I always give in and go down to him, let him out for toilet, which he does but won't settle again. Sometimes he doesn't need the toilet but I don't let him back in the house until he has been ! It used to be around 5am and I would take him back to bed with me (big mistake I know). For the past week I have still gone down at 3am but put him back in his crate but he will only settle for a short while then starts to bark again. Now its getting earlier, I am afraid it will upset the neighbours and I am losing too much sleep as I get up at 6am for work. His crate is in the kitchen. I have tried changing his bedding to more luxurious fabrics, old duvets etc. to no avail. Any ideas on how to get him to sleep through until morning would be appreciated.:(

At that age, he should be easily able to go through the night. If he is waking up at exactly 3 AM every night, something must be disturbing him. See if you can identify and eliminate anything on a timer. As for getting him to settle back down again, try giving him a small Kong filled with peanut butter.
