    Outlook Express SMTP Error
Gidday, my name is Glenn and I am running Win XPSp2Pro. IE7 with Mozilla Firefox and use Outlook Express. All of a sudden yesterday I keep having errors saying that my server has not responded in 180 seconds and do I want to wait or stop. I press wait and it just keeps repeating. I have run registry programs, deleted the account and re-created it, made sure that all the information in the properties, servers etc is correct, which it is and went to the 10.0.0 etc and disconnected and then connected and saved. Restarted my machine and still am unable to complete the sending of my emails. Very confusing and frustrating!! Is there anyone out there able to help me please? Oh, and I have run system file checker through the run command using the win xp disk to make sure all my window files are intact... which they are, and I have run various spyware programs to ensure that my computer is clean. As far as I know it is from their 0 results. Any ideas would be most appreciated

    Cheers

Do you have Mcaffee antivirus? There's a setting in there somewhere (not sure exactly where) that will block connections to mail servers. It's meant to keep viruses from sending out mail, but it messes with regular mail too. It may have gotten turned on by mistake, or during an upgrade.

Other than that, can the computer access the internet fine? If so, it may be the mail server is down, or some of the settings have changed. You might want to check you ISP's website to see if they have a walkthrough for setting up your email account in outlook exrpess.

Thank you for the prompt reply. Unfortunately, not that easy. I have PC Security Shield, that is I am running 'The Shield' Firewall and the Hauri ViRobot Anti-virus. I have uninstalled both of these and tried and still get the same error. I phoned my provider and they said that it must be my computer, (though I get the feeling that is a generic answer!), so I will just keep trying to find a solution

Glenn, the SMTP server is your outbound mail server... many (most?) ISP have blocked port 25 in efforts of reducing SPAM. Is your SMTP set to your ISP's mail server? Is this a home (vs business) account?

Are the 2 lower boxes below - checked or unchecked?

Exactly like the picture. I have deleted the account and re-created it and all is as it should be, there are no typos or wrong information, at least on my end. I am beginning to think that the fault is on their end. I will just have to keep phoning them until they get a fix. Oh! I almost forgot, this is set up as a business account with the provider only. Thank you for you time and help

    Cheers

Glenn, are you using a biz (dot com) domain a/o an internal mail server OR are you using the ISP's (2) mail servers? Who is the ISP? Is this not a new setup, when was it last working?

If applicable, what is your domain name? It is not often, but if you should see me online, you can IM me & you should refer yourself to this askmehelpdesk forum.

P2E, no, simply my address is [email protected]. I do not mind anyone seeing this, for me it is not a problem. I am using the ISP's server and only that server. I have had this address for a couple of years now and up until I posted my first question on this forum, I had never had this particular problem. I do not use IM, OE is my only form of outward communication other than going onto the web/browsing etc.

    Cheers

Hmmm, if you deleted and recreated the acct and the login/pwd is correct, it is beginning to sound like a possible mail server issue. As you had mentioned earlier, you might want to contact your ISP help desk.

Let me know how you come out with the ISP's tech support..
