    Excessive water use
My daughter's city water department claims her house is using 10,000 gallons of water per day. There are no leaks inside the house. The city claims the meter is working correctly and the lateral to the house may be broken. Wouldn't she have a swimming pool in her yard or at least water in the crawl space? At an average city water pressure, how much water can go through a 3/4" pipe per day with regular use? My daughter is a single mother of two and cannot afford the plumbing repair.

Where is the meter, in the house or out by the curb? 10,000 gal a day is a lot of water but that is almost identical to my calculation for 3/4 pipe if its is snapped off. Probably 7-8 gallons per minute. If the pipe is broken close to the street and its about 4' down a great deal of water could be picked up by storm drains. If she closes off her house main and the meter still turns then tell them to shut it off at the street. You ownership of the problem usually starts at the meter, tell us where it is located.
    Thanks
