I doubt you can find a contractor that will work for free, possibly at low cost.
A contractor needs to charge for his services to pay bills, such as fuel to get a truck to the jobsite, for payroll, as his employees work for pay to eat and a roof over their heads, and pay for materials, along with licenses, permit fees, insurances, vehicles, rent, etc, etc.
You may find one that will do work at cost, or provide materials at cost.
You may start by calling local contractors to see if there is someone that will work with the client, either a discount rate, or pay on time.
Posting here in this forum will not be much help, esp if we do not know where you are located.
If you are located in a cold climate, certainly heat will be needed, esp for the kids. I would think there is a state agency that can help somehow. May be Social Service, or Housing Dept. etc. something of that nature.
I wish I could be of more help. Time to think outside the box and be creative of who could help.
If your in Central Maine, I can be there in an hour, and I personally would be glad to donate my time, for the kids sake.
