An orange wire,600v is wrapped together instead of being joined with connectors, could that be the reason the furnace shuts off without maintaining desired temp. Cleaned the flame sensor, put in new thermostat. Unit heats the house, but doesn't maintain heat. #34 flashes,and then the unit shuts down #14. How do I fix this? Why does it shut off even when the temp. drops too low in house? Please help me.

Carrier I'm assuming,, #34 is a flame failure code as is the #14 flame failure lockout.

Look for dirty burners, poor earth ground or a powered ground wire,

All these will cause flame not to be sensed

Make sure filter is clean. Another problem could be a dirty evaporator coil, this will make the furnace cut off on the limit switch for a couple of times and then go into lock out.

If the orange wire is just twisted together and leads to the flame sensor, adding a wire nut might solve the problem. Otherwise, cleaning the sensor with sand paper might help.
