    Postpartum blleding
I'm 6 weeks postpartum and breast-feeding but experiencing bright red bleeding. I went to hospital and he is sending me for pelvic ultrasound but he said he thinks it might just be my period. I thought if you are nursing you don't get your period until at least 6 months. Could he be wrong? Could it be my period or do you think something is wrong?

This very well could be your period. When we tell patients that they don't get their period for 6 months while breast feeding, please understand that this is only an average. Some women do indeed get it earlier, while others may not get it at all for the duration of breastfeeding.

Your doctor is just being safe by sending you for an ultrasound to rule out any post partum hemorrhage, but again, bleeding 6 weeks after delivery is common.

Thank you for your PM, however, others may be interested in what is going on, or someone else may be able to help you in my absence.

Now, my answer may have been different had you told me there was pain and heavy bleeding in your original post. However, it still may be your first period after the birth of your baby.

As I don't know your past medical history, nor do I know the circumstances of the labor and delivery you personally experienced, it is very hard for me to tell you if this is normal for you.

Follow your doctor's advice and have that ultrasound done.
