I am having a intermintant problem with my furnace, I came home the blower was on no heat , I checked the themostat setting - ficked the service switch off and on a couple of times- burner started, I can hear the burner when it comes on, the furnace ran all day without problem I wake in the night same thing blower running cold air go down fick the service switch burner comes on is thia a transformer problem? There is plenty of fuel in tank

Are you talking about the reset?

Not the red reset but the switch on the outside of furnace which shuts down all power to furnace

If it is not the reset switch then you somehow are losing power to the unit. If the burner has the new style safety it could be the problem but I would check the power circuit from the panel to the furnace and from the furnace switch to the control before I would start replacing parts. Also check the ground (uninsulated conductor) to make sure it is landed on both ends of the circuit.

I checked the wiring all seems tight, this unit has been running fine all day, it cold and sleeting here in Pennsylvania- when you say new style safety. What I have is a honeywell R8184G1427 -the furnace a Rheem ROBC 8676BEA
And a Beckett AFG burner, I have a scheduled tune up for the 10th of December not sure this will act up while they are here or perhaps stop running before then , hate to pay for two service calls if this is a simple control swap the unit has power with the blower running and the thermostat calling for heat -had the unit cleaned and serviced last year new nozzle & filter tech spent about 2 hours going over the unit

I am about at the end of the rope here without being there to take a look see. What is confusing to me is that the burner stops running and you do not have to hit the reset. The only thing else I can think of is a limit safety control that could be cutting power from time to time but that would not explain the reset on the disconnect and reconnect of the 120 volt power.

Many years ago I had a intermittent R8184 control. It was not acting exactly like yours but similar. I replaced the control and the problem went away. I ended up taking the old control apart and found a out of value capacitor causing the problem.
If you have a spare R8184 or similar protecto/primary control handy you might change it out to see if it solves the problem. I am not a part changer type of person but in this case that is what I would do.

If the blower unit was running but no burner fire and I pushed the reset should the unit fire right away or is there a time delay? In my quest to start the unit in the past I am sure I pressed the reset without a response, then turning the power off and on, and getting the unit to fire

Usually when you push the reset it should come on. There should be no great delay. Here is a little info on the control.

Thanks for the link, now that I think about this a little ,earlier in the week when coming home from work all the appliances in the house were flashing indicating a power failure I wonder if this could have damaged the control, at any rate this will take some time to isolate, thanks for all your time and consideration
