CRAFTSMAN Briggs & Stratton 19HP 46" Lawn Tractor Won't Start unless.
    Hi -

My CRAFTSMAN Briggs & Stratton 19HP 46" Lawn Tractor Won't Start unless I put some gas directly in the carb. I've changed the spark plugs, put new gas in the tank and replaced the small fuel filter. I'm encouraged that it finally started, but it won't start without adding the gas directly. What can I do to fix this?

    Thanks!

Adding gas to the carb is virually the same as cutting off air. The fuel mixture is rich and your choking the engine in a different way.

The first thing I'd look for is whether the linkage is set properly and the engine is actually choking when it's supposed to.

OK - I verified that the choke is working - at least mechnically it does. I pull the choke knob out and I can see that the linkage moves. I'm a real novice, so go slowly.
    Thank you

Look in the carb and see if a plate obstructs the air intake when you move the choke.

If you can post a link to the engine at www.briggsandstratton.com or even PartsDirect.com it might help both of us.

Have you cleaned the carb at least removed the carb float bowl and cleaned it yet? If not try this.

OK - The battery Charged over night and the tractor engine turned over and started nicely this morn. I used the choke at first because I left it outside over night and it was very cold as you all know.

    NEW PROBLEM!

After I ran the tractor for 5 minutes and attempted to get it into drive it didn't move. I tried forward, reverse, etc. I made sure that the pin in the back was set for driving and not pushing. What should I be looking for? It's an automatic transmission - Is there some sort of belt? Sheer Pin?

    Thanks for your assistance!

Be sure your choke is functioning properly.
