From one old fart to another! I'm 80 and just pulled, rebuilt and reinstalled two toilets for my neighbor so don't hassle the age thing.
Don't worry about the trap. It's built inti the toilet bowl and the measures will stay the same for a 12" rough in bowl so that's another worry off your mind.
May I ask why you're replacing the toilet? Toilets don't wear out. The innards go bad and must be replaced but the porcelain tank and bowl remain the same as when they were installed 50 years ago,(unless you have a high mineral content in your water). I know, we moved into our home 52 years ago just after it was built and still have the same two toilets. But hey! If you want to change out that old potty, tell you whot! You buy a new toilet and I'll walk you through putting it together, pulling the old toilet and installing the new one, step by step. Sound like a plan? Tom

For the love of plumbing do not get rid of that WC! Like speedball said only the insides wear out not the throne... besides I can almost promise you that you will hate the new style of WC's as they do not flush no where near as good as the old ones! Im a spring chicken compared to you to gentlemen but I know a good thing when I see it and the old style WC's were the best!
