Hi all. I have a 14 month old male boxer and he has only one descended testicle. All the vets tell us we need to get him fixed because he is at a much higher risk of getting cancer. He is small for a boxer but because of his age and one testicle being undescended the cost will be higher I am sure. All of the vets say we have to schedule an appointment before they can give us a price because they would have to see him first, but that will cost us as well so I was just wondering if anyone had any knowledge of this situation and could give me a ballpark range of cost. I think it largly depends on the vet and your area. People in my area pay anywhere from $25 - $50.

I can understand them wanting to check him out before they'll give you a cost though. Because it isn't a typical situation, he needs to be evaluated. First, ask them what an exam will cost you. You could also call other vets and ask if they're willing to give you a ball-park estimate.

I am not sure anybody here can give a good answer. RubyPitbull is the most likely to give more than a guess. I am afraid you would have to hit a low cost clinic to get a routine neutering for $25-$50. I would figure at least $100 at a standard vet practice with one undecended testicle.

It really depends on the area you live in. But, rest assured, that it won't be $25 -$50. That is usually the cost for neutering a cat. Dogs cost at least $75 in rural areas. In highly urban areas, it is closer to $150. An undescended testicle, as you seem to be aware of, creates complications. The problem that a vet has is that they don't know what they are dealing with until they perform the surgery. If you know what they charge for a normal neutering, that is your starting point. The easiest rule of thumb would be to double that as a safe estimation of the cost. It might possibly be a bit more than double. It really is hard to say. Pricing has really changed in the past couple of years and vets are learning pets are big business. I would suggest that you speak with friends and neighbors in your area and find out which ones have to had any surgery performed on their dogs and how they feel about their vets and the way the surgery was handled, along with the costs associated with the surgery. Pick the one that comes with a gushing recommendation and pay for the cost of the office visit and evaluation. If you already have a vet in mind after speaking with a few and prefer one over the other, then the simplest thing to do would be to go with that one. They really should be able to give you a decent ballpark figure at the time of the examination of the cost of the surgery at that time. In either case, I would stick with the same vet that does the evaluation to do the surgery as well.

in. Cost estimate is from $368-$589. I am not yet sure why the large difference, He
Is a small Maltese.

One of the main reasons may be that the original question is almost three years old. I have noticed vets prices have been increasing over the past ten years but there has been a dramatic rise in rates in my area over the past two years. The other reasons for the price differential are the size of the dog (smaller dogs can be considered harder to work on than larger ones) and the fact that you are having other work being done at the same time. I don't know where you are located but that price wouldn't be considered unreasonable if you are living in or around a highly populated area.
