Dec. 31,2006 My aging schedule has an Allowance for uncollectibles totaling $1320. The allowance for uncollectible acct. has a bal. of $1,400 on jan. 1,2006. During the year, bad debts of $750 were written off. What would all my journal entries w/ respect to uncollectible accts. & the allow. For uncollectible accts. Be? Thanks!

January it tells you the balance for allowance for uncollectible accounts, which might be from the previous year, then during the year you wrote off an account,
    Dr.Allowance for uncollectible accounts... 750
    Cr.Accounts receivable... 750
then it according to the aging schedule for uncollectible your balance for allowance for uncollectable accounts should be 1320, then
    Dr.Bad debts expense... 670
    Cr.Allowance for doubtful accounts... 670

    Beginning credit balance $1,400 - wrote off $750 + credit adjustment $670 = Cr. Balance of $1,320
    Hope you find this helpful

I am not sure but I think it will be like this:

I think the principle to bear in mind is:

When you actually write off bad debts, you debit the corresponding Expense account (eg Bad Debts) and Credit the Allowance for Uncollectables expense account. Both of these are Expense accounts.

You also Credit the corresponding Accounts Receivables accounts.

The net result is that your Asset account (A/R) is reduced, and the above Expense accounts are properly adjusted. The Allowance is reduced and the actual Uncollectable is increased.
