Long distance relationships can work for a while but it all depends on the person and how long each person can tolerate being apart. There needs to come to a point where changes have to be made so it is not long distance anymore. If not, there will be a breaking point and not work out. There is no guarantee it would work out either way anyway.

This is just my opinion, take it as you will.

If it is a permanent situation then long distant relationships never really work. They are almost always painful relationships. No matter how much you talk over the phone, internet etc... without physically seeing/touching each other the "love" will eventually die. Ontop of this you will always be missing each other even when you are comunicating with that person. This just causes unnesecary pain.

Although if it is only a temperary situation then there is a good chance that it will work out fine.
