I'm finishing a basement. I need to move a ceiling light fixture about 4 feet from where the builder installed it. However, he didn't leave me any slack in the line. I need to lengthen the wire. It would be impossible to pull a new wire. How is the best way to splice it? Are wire nuts acceptable? Do the connections need to be in a junction box? If it matters, I live in the Knoxville, Tennessee area.

I believe a junction box and wire nutting wires is the most acceptable fix...

Not sure about the code in your city or state -- should be fine...

Before you answer, let me add that the ceiling is going to be a 2x2 suspended ceiling and the junction box would be accessible by removing a panel.

I would like a little more detail if possible.

It shouldn't be any problem, wire nut the black, white, and bare from the 3 wires in the cable in the current box for the light. Also add another short bare wire to a screw in the box. Add a cover.
