My oil burner repairman cannot figure out why the oil is blowing back into the part that is attached to the pump. Everything has been replaced, nozzle, pump, eye, etc. It is a Beckett burner and the nozzle that is in there is .75/80 hollow. Why would the oil blow back, 0other than the nozzle is not working correctly? Thanks Maggievee

Could be a cracked nozzle holder. Been there before. Look for a hair line crack in the nozzle holder. Also pump needs to be at proper oil pressure and the air over the burner needs to be adjusted properly.

I have new pump and new nozzle holder, so it could not be that. Thank you for answering.

It still could be the nozzle holder. They can be cracked brand new.
Is this a new burner assembly just being installed causing this problem?

It happened before that whole piece was replaced. He thought that is what it was but the new whole ceramic piece with nozzle and eye did not help. Oil is still flowing backward and wetting everything up to the eye.

Make sure you have the correct length burner tube for the electrode/oil feed line assembly. The wrong burner tube or to short of a oil feed line setup will allow turburlance in the tube and cause oil to spit back.

Hi, I want to thank you all for your assistance. You have been very helpful - and educational. What is the difference between a hollow tube nozzle and the other and how do we know the correct nozzle is in there.

Size is determined by the capacity of the furnace in BTU's. It will be listed on the furnace/boiler tag. Hollow,soild,semi solid, is the way the nozzle is constructed to spray into the combustion. Hollow flame,solid flame ETC. If you do a Google search I am sure you will find the different firing patterns with pictures.Go here for a good link with great pics.

OK, back to the boiler problem. We got new nozzle and everything worked great for a few days. Now there is smoke in the gun. Why is it drawing air into it?I need to know now where the air is coming from. After bleeding it is is fine for a while but then stops again. Help again

You need to take your boiler information or model number and make sure everything that is supposed to be in there is correct. The wrong characteristics of a nozzle can cause all kinds of problems including smoke. It also sounds like a lot of after drip, and a break somewhere in the flow of oil. If you really want to stop all of this nonsense, use the model number to find out what kind of burner is needed for your appliance and install a new burner. Expensive but it doesn't seem like your technician can not diagnose the problem correctly
