Is there a way to renumber a list using Microsoft Word? That is, say I have a numbered list of twenty items and I want to add an item to the middle of the list then re-number the list.
When I've had the same need to insert an item in a numbered list I simply put my cursor at the end of the line of the previous entry and press Enter. It continues the numbering scheme and adjust the following items' numbers as well.

If you use the automatic numbering, then just inserting another entry will renumber the list.
