7 yr old lab having seizures
My fiance's dog Sam has seizures. It's really really sad! He's a fairly big yellow lab, he weighs about 60 pounds and is about 2 feet tall.. He has about 2-3 weekly. He has really really bad ears, and his family thinks it's because of his ears.. but I think differently! His ears are really swollen and he always rubs them and scratches them. Do you think his seizures are caused by his ears? When he has his seizures he gets really really tense and slobbers non-stop. He used to throw up, pee and poo while having them, but now he doesn't. He just slobbers. When he is having a seizure I think he can hear me when I talk to him. They usually last about 5 minutes. But his family is thinking about putting him asleep... I am FREAKING out! I think it's wrong if you can do something about it. Please let me know what you think. We took him to the vet and they said they have no idea what is wrong, but they didn't do any bloodwork. That doesn't make any sense. One of his parents had seizures too, so I'm thinking he is epileptic. But I don't know for sure! Any advice will help! Please give me your advice! Thanks!

Take him to another vet, they should prescribe him medications if he's epileptic, but obviously I can't say for sure if he is or not, but seizures are very bad, and very dangerous, and with his ears being all messed up, there may be something else wrong with him. :(

If they put some money into him, the current vet, or another one, might or might not be able to pinpoint the problem and relieve it. The owners really should do it. If they are welshing on their commitment to him, perhaps they may as well go all the way and have him killed.

The next time you see another rant from Labman on the misery caused by breeders that don't have a clue, remember this thread. I would spay/neuter anybody that knowingly bred a dog known to have had seizures.

We had a dog who developed epelepsy at age 7, we bred him ourselves and neither of the parents nor his brothers or sisters had it. He was put on medication by the vet, which helps to control his seizures, but means that he would have a speeded up death as the medication destroys the dogs internal organs. Gradually he had to have the dosage put up, as he got used to the medication and seizures continued, and eventually he had to be put down, and it is likely that your dog may eventually suffer the same fate. The big problem with dogs who have seizures, especially if there are other dogs in the same household, is that when they 'come to' they are very spaced out and forget their surroundings and are likely to be more aggressive than usual, so make sure you keep your distance and remove other animals from the situation. Also dogs are very hungry after a seizure so make sure he gets a big slap up meal straight after, hope this helps :)
