How can you find out where a person has been in the last 8 weeks?
My husband and I had a fight and he took off 8 weeks ago. I have been told that he is in a rehab but nobody will tell me where he is. How can I find out where he has been the last 8 weeks? I also have a missing persons report filed. I have heard nothing.

If he is in rehab it is against the law for any of the rehabs to reveal his whereabouts if indeed he is in their facility. This is known as HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act).

So, he can die there and they won't tell me?? What about my rights as his wife?

It is against the law for a rehab center, whether it be for drugs and/or alcohol, or the mentally ill, to reveal the names of patients to anyone. It all has to do with his privacy. Unfortunately, your right as his wife does not matter to the facility, as you are not their patient. They have to protect the rights of the patient, and the patient only.

Look at it this way... If you were to call and see if he is there, how do they know you are his wife? Just because you say so? Nah, doesn't work like that, I could call and say I was his wife too. Or his employer could tell his secretary to call and say she was his wife. How would they know who is telling the truth?

Unfortunately, as his wife, you have no rights. And I don't mean to sound rude, or harsh, but you are not their patient. He is, thus he is the one with the rights.

So, what am I supposed to do? Wait around and hope he comes back?

You already have a missing person's report filed. You can call the local rehabs, but I doubt you will get very far due to the HIPAA laws. Have you talked with his family? What was the reason he walked out 8 weeks ago?

I have talked to his family. They don't know where he is. Right! They lie. They always know where he is. If he asks them not to say anything to me, they will be silent. I don't know why. His parents love me. We argued over his secrets.

Because he is their son, that's why. I really don't mean to sound harsh, but he is their blood and they are going to protect him.

Barb, is there more to this story that is missing?

No. He has always taken off and ran away ever since he was 12. When something doesn't go his way, or if something is said that he doesn't like, he runs. Low self-esteem

If he would die, they would notify whoever his listed on his paperwork as a contact. Does he drive a car, have you went by his relations at 3am looking for it? Does he work, guess not.

If he left, there has to be a reason for leaving, did you to fight, was he leaving you? Have the police question the other family, if they lie during an investigation, they can be charged if they hide facts from the police

There are normally limited number of rehab facilities in a general area? Does he have enough money to afford one of these ? Would his family doctor have referred him?

Unfortunately, due to the privacy acts, HIPAA in specific, this info is kept private, so this would be a road block for her.

The car is here. He only took most of his clothing. He is in contact with his sister. She has told me that she hasn't talked to him in weeks. She also lies through here teeth. His parents live in another state. His job was he worked for himself. The police have called his sister and parnets. They don't answer the phone. Instead, they would rather pick up a bottle.

Janine, I have about your story. Bless you fighting and being a survivor!
I have a question for you. How can one go to a facility and get assistance to be there?
Do you have any advise as to what I should do, before I end up in a padded room?

I'm sorry Barb, I don't quite understand what you mean. What kind of facility and what kind of assistance? Is this for you?
