Ask Me Help Desk - Puppies with a protective dog- and a TODDLER

Here is the deal we have this dog she just had puppies but she had them behind the couch and some of them are going underneath it and she won't let us come near here also she hasn't eaten since thanksgiving that's when she had them and she hasnot went if you know what I mean and I have no idea how long it'll take her to mellow out a little help me please . Id leave her alone but I have a toddler she'll try to get to the puppies I don't want anyone to get hurt:(

Your toddler comes first. You have to either keep it out of the living room, or get her and the puppies out of it. I don't have any experience fixing such a mess. It is not usual and acceptable for the mother to be so protective. I assume you have tried the finest treats to lure her out? Check with a vet Saturday and see if there is any way to sedate her. How big is she? If she can't be sedated, she will have to be removed forcibly. If she is too big for you to tackle, you will have to contact a professional dog handler and have him dress in protective gear and remove her. Since you have completely failed as a dog owner, I suggest turning her and the litter over to animal control and let them do their best.

If you were giving her any sort of leadership, she would accept you moving her and the litter out of your living room. Why did you let a dog you didn't have a good relationship with get pregnant? If you have the right relationship with the dog, it will let you handle the puppies as soon as they are born.

Some of us here question the breeding, but it is quite evident the people have a good loving relationship with their dogs. Just like my friends that I have visited when their dogs were whelping. I wasn't trusted to do much except cuddle puppies after they were bathed and dried to help warm them up.

but here's th e thing she is small she's a lap dog I have a good relationship with her .but all of a sudden she gets me an I handled her puppies once but after I put them down and went away for awhile she got mean I was able to put a small dish of water down there but I coulnt get the food there. I breeded other dogs but I have never came across this type. But I think its because her past we rescuued her from an abusive family her other puppies were put in garbage bags and thrown away.since she was abused she had a late litter.

But here's the thing my dog came from an abusive past... we rescued her from them. And her past litters were put in garbage bags and thrown away his is her first litter here but I have handled them once before and managed to put some water down there from her but I couldn't get the food down there.but yet I can't get the puppies from going down under the couch --HELP
