I'm confused about selecting the antivirus for my PC ,can u tell me which is the best antivirus and also the best among the free antivirus softwares

Best is a relative term, so I won't use it.

AVG is one of the better Anti viruses on the market and best of all its free.

One word of caution, DON'T use NORTON as they have become really bad over the last few years, causing lots of problems with Windows XP.

Regarding Norton, I wouildn't have anything else but that on my computers, some running Windows XP Home and PRO. Never had any problems.

I agree with the AVG. It's free, and also has a buy version for $33 for 2 years.
I bought it; cuase I like the ability to turn off the "Scanned by AVG" in all the emails I send from Outlook Express. Just personally, I don't it there. So, I bought it... can't turn it off with the free version.
AVG has antivirus definitions, downloads, and what is great, is it doesn't wait to get a whole bunch at once. It will download only 1 definition, as it is created, or two or three at once.
I used Norton, but got rid of it, for AVG.

Norton has really taken a nose dive in my opinion, and I don't know anyone who recommends it. It is true that if it's on and working you may be OK, but once you have problems with Norton trust me you'll want to change. Maybe we should all take a vote to get everyone's opinion?
